Brushing alone won’t reach all the spaces between your teeth while wearing braces. Flossing is essential to keep your teeth and gums healthy. A floss threader, available from our office or a pharmacy, makes it easier to floss with braces. Use it once a day: thread the floss through the threader, slip it behind your archwire, gently move it between your teeth and under the gums, then rinse thoroughly.
Use a fluoridated toothpaste every day to protect your teeth from cavities. In some cases, your orthodontist may recommend a fluoride rinse for extra protection.
Most foods are fine to eat with braces, but certain items can damage your appliances. Avoid sticky foods like gum and taffy, hard foods like whole apples or carrots (cut them into small pieces), crunchy snacks like popcorn, nuts, and corn chips, and very sugary treats such as candy, cookies, and cake.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an initial orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Early diagnosis allows the orthodontist to guide growth and prevent more serious issues. Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for children—about 25% of patients are adults. Advances in technology and clear braces make treatment effective and discreet for any age.
Full orthodontic treatment usually takes between 18 and 30 months, depending on the complexity of the case and the amount of movement needed.
Even if your teeth look straight, an improper bite can cause jaw pain, excessive wear, or other oral health problems. Orthodontics ensures both a beautiful smile and a healthy bite.
You may experience minor discomfort after adjustments, but over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil usually help.
Yes. Regular dental visits are still necessary to maintain overall oral health during orthodontic care.
Your orthodontist will provide an estimated completion date. Keep in mind that missed appointments or not following instructions (like wearing elastics) may extend treatment time.
After braces are removed, retainers are worn full-time for the first year. After that, wear schedules depend on your individual needs and how well your teeth hold their new position.
A bite plate helps correct a deep bite and prevents your upper teeth from biting into your lower braces.
Every patient’s needs are unique. A personalized exam is required to determine the cost of treatment.
